The design of a retaining wall must account for the weight of the soil being retained, the surcharge load from structures, vehicles, or heavy plantings above the wall, the drainage conditions behind the wall, and the foundation soil bearing capacity at the wall base. Timber walls are cost-effective for low-height applications but are generally limited in longevity compared to stone and concrete block due to wood degradation over time.
